This is a project I did a while back. I designed and built this one-of-a-kind desk to be used in a home office. The desk had to be unique looking and functional. The design also had to capitalize on the rustic nature of the materials being used. I came up with this design.
The large plank is a threshing floor board which I sanded out and finished with about 10 coats of oil based urethane. Also used in the construction of this piece are 4 inch braces and a barn beam.
There is no stain used on the wood at all; the color is the natural tone of the wood after being sealed with urethane.
I wanted to keep as much of the original character of the materials, so I wanted to come up with a design that would leave the original tooling in tact. Another strategy in designing this table was that I wanted it to be removable should the owner decide to move, so I wanted it to be easy to disassemble yet rock solid. I decided to let the weight of the materials and gravity play a big role in the construction.
Very unique looking, and very functional in design, this desk is a winner.
